😔 Guilty

Why it happens

Guilt shows up because your brain would rather believe you could have controlled the outcome than accept that you couldn't. Blame feels safer than helplessness.

What it might mean

It usually means you cared enormously about doing right by them. Guilt is love looking for somewhere to put its hands.

Healthy ways to respond

  • Write the sentence you keep replaying, then write what you actually knew at the time.
  • Say the difference out loud: “I regret it” is true; “it was my fault” usually isn't.
  • Tell one person the thing you feel guilty about. Guilt shrinks in daylight.

Grounding

Press your palms flat together and push for ten seconds. Release. Notice your hands are the only thing you can hold right now.

Journal prompt

What would I say to a friend who told me they'd done exactly what I did?
